VISIONARY MEDIA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization whose mission is to provide opportunities and a voice to a community of talented people who are blind or visually-impaired in music, media and advertising. Though our specific aim is to support the creative development, expression and professional success of talent in these industries, Visionary Media's more holistic goal is to help develop meaningful, independent, self-actualized and hopeful lives for those who are blind or visually-impaired.
We train, mentor, and develop the skills of our talent and provide collaborative workshops to foster community, inspiration, and support. We shape our talent into confident, professional ambassadors that set an example of what is possible for people with disabilities in the 21st century.
Digital technology and computers are increasingly transforming us into a visual-mediated society where people are processing messages through images. Social media is one of the more prevalent examples of how the exchange of information relies heavily around photos and videos. Not only is this a challenge for the blind in general, but for creative individuals like musicians, this obstacle hinders the ability to transform a passion or hobby into a serious and rewarding career.
Visionary Media therefore fulfill the needs of this niche demographic by helping our talent adapt to industry trends and build the steps towards job placement or creative fulfillment. We recognize the significance of visual communications in the 21st century and we provide our talent the tools they need to progress along with others who are sighted and pursuing the same opportunities.
For example, we help a musician who is blind set up social media sites and generate visual content such as photos, videos, logos or web graphics. We also provide assistance with portfolios, resumes, cover letters, and press kits for those seeking employment opportunities.
Visionary Media evolved from the unique, creative energy and spirit of music producer Doug Maxwell. Doug, who is legally-blind, started the organization to give back to a community of musically-gifted individuals, and since inception in 2007, Visionary Media has reached over 200 talented people who are blind or visually-impaired.
Doug Maxwell has 25 years of experience in music and advertising. Having produced music for many artists, including Gladys Knight and Joan Osborne, and composed music for the Nabisco and Sheraton brands, Doug brings an influential network to Visionary Media's talent.
